Redesign of the My City App and the integration of a smart assistant

s-LIM is an initiative that helps cities and municipalities with their digital transformation. With smart maps, sensors, cameras and data platforms s-Lim supports local authorities in realizing digital services with direct added value for both citizens and the government.

The My City App provides residents with easy access to city services and local information. S-Lim asked us to redesign the app visually and functionally to make it more consistent and user-friendly.

Challenge

Challenge

S-Lim supports cities in their digital transformation. Their flagship product, My CityApp, needed a significant evolution to meet modern standards. The project had two primary goals:

  • Visual modernization: Overhauling an outdated UI to align with a forward-thinking vision.

  • Gen AI integration: Implementing a smart assistant to guide citizens through administrative tasks and "key life events" (e.g., moving, birth, marriage).

The constraint: We had to design a standardized solution that works for multiple municipalities simultaneously, excluding city-specific integrations to ensure scalability and process uniformity.

Redesign of the current app

To find the right visual direction, we presented four distinct design proposals. Through a collaborative feedback session, we selected a "best-of" direction, merging the strongest elements into a final, modern UI.

Since My CityApp was an existing product, a design library was already in place.

My expertise in Figma allowed me to:

  • Efficiently update colors, tokens, and components across the entire library.

  • Execute a full visual refresh in a short timeframe without compromising existing functionalities.

  • Ensure the new UI components remained flexible enough for various municipal contexts.

My role consisted of completely redesigning the existing component library. This formed the basis for redesigning the app itself, enabling us to build new screens faster and more consistently.

The complexity of this project mainly lay in working with an extensive existing component library. Since the library was still in active use, I had to proceed with caution when publishing the new components. It was crucial to prevent elements from the old version from being lost and to ensure that existing screens were not affected.

The result is a modern application that aligns with the client’s vision for the future, with a core focus on scalability and user-friendliness. This experience taught me the importance of having a structured version management strategy and working closely with development teams when implementing design updates. This approach ensured a controlled transition to the new design without compromising the continuity of the existing app.

Research

Research

We explored the city hall context, user needs, key life moments, and technical constraints through research and workshops. Based on this, we co-created and validated concepts with stakeholders to define a clear product vision.

We integrated a smart assistant into the My CityApp to provide citizens with better support in everyday situations and important life moments. Simultaneously, the assistant provides a secondary benefit by supporting counter clerks.

Through research into "top tasks," counter visits, and "magical moments" in citizens' lives, we mapped needs and thresholds where a digital assistant could provide the most value. Based on these insights, we developed personas and user journeys, which were validated and translated into an initial conversation flow.
